Which Aircraft for Which Mission? How We Choose the Right Air Ambulance

A choice that starts with the patient

Choosing an aircraft for an air ambulance mission is never just about the distance to cover. Three factors come first: the severity of the patient's condition and the medical equipment required, the range needed to reach the destination without an unnecessary stop, and the nature of the arrival airfield — a short runway or a lightly equipped airport can rule out larger aircraft entirely.

Light jets: fast response for regional missions

For an intra-European transfer or a distance of a few hundred to just over a thousand kilometres, a light jet such as the Cessna Citation V or Learjet 45XR offers the fastest response: quick mobilization, access to smaller airfields, and controlled cost. Their cabin typically accommodates up to two stretchers.

Medium jets: more room for the medical team

For a longer mission or one requiring more on-board medical equipment, a medium jet such as the Learjet 60 provides a taller, wider cabin in which the medical team can work standing around the patient — a real advantage for complex cases.

Long-range jets: reach and full critical care

For an intercontinental repatriation or a patient requiring full critical care (ECMO, multiple simultaneous stretchers), a long-range jet such as the Challenger 604 or Challenger 650 can cover long distances without a stop, with enough space for a complete intensive-care setup — and, on the Challenger 650, up to four stretchers at once.
